Palm Reading Basics: What the Major Lines on Your Hand Indicate

Palmistry reads the hand as a record of temperament and tendency. It works best alongside a birth chart rather than in place of one: the chart supplies timing, the hand supplies character and confirmation. Used together, the two rarely contradict each other.

The four major lines

  • Heart line — the uppermost horizontal line, describing emotional nature and how a person forms attachments. A long, clear line suggests steady affection; a chained or broken line suggests turbulence.
  • Head line — running below it, this reflects thinking style. A straight line indicates practical, direct reasoning; a curved line suggests imagination and creativity.
  • Life line — curving around the base of the thumb. Contrary to popular belief it does not measure lifespan; it reflects vitality, constitution and major changes in circumstance.
  • Fate line — rising vertically toward the middle finger, describing career direction and how much external influence shapes one’s path. Its absence is not a negative sign; it often indicates a self-directed life.

The mounts

The raised areas at the base of each finger are named after planets — Jupiter, Saturn, Sun and Mercury — with Venus at the thumb and Mars along the edges. A well-developed mount strengthens that planet’s qualities. This is where palmistry connects directly to the birth chart, since a strong Jupiter mount usually accompanies a strong Jupiter in the horoscope.

Which hand is read

Traditionally the dominant hand shows life as it is being lived, and the other shows inherited tendency and potential. Differences between the two are informative: they show how far a person has moved from their starting disposition.

What palmistry cannot do

Palmistry describes tendency, not fixed destiny, and it cannot supply precise dates. Anyone offering exact predictions of death, or demanding a large payment to avert a catastrophe seen in the hand, is not practising genuine palmistry. Read honestly, the hand offers self-understanding and useful direction — nothing more alarming than that.
